There aren’t many sections of the canal that can boast as much wildlife as this one. For good reason, the Pocklington Canal is popular with wildlife lovers from across the country. And over this relatively short canal, it packs a huge wildlife punch.
Measuring just 9.5 miles in length and with 3 working locks, the Pocklington Canal has 3 sites of special scientific interest! That’s a lot of wildlife to house. Paddlers can expect to spot several varieties of dragonfly and damselfly, and varieties of aquatic plant. As well as this you’ll find kingfishers, grey heron and curlew too. Be sure to look carefully in the reedbeds and hedgerows for some other wildlife spots!
The Pocklington canal has only been kept open by the hard work of volunteers who are constantly working hard to save this canal for everyone to enjoy!
