The River Frome is a classic Dorset chalk stream that offers paddlers a mix of gentle touring and rich scenery. Rising near Evershot, the river winds east through Dorchester before reaching Wareham, and flowing into Poole Harbour. Unlike some of Dorset’s flashier rivers, the Frome has a quiet charm, with meadows, reedbeds, and low wooded banks shaping much of its course.

For paddlers, the lower sections around Wareham are the most accessible. From here the river widens and slows, making it ideal for touring kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Trips often run from Wareham Quay downstream into Poole Harbour, where sheltered waters and wide skies create a memorable day on the water. The tidal influence near Wareham adds variety, but paddlers should be mindful of timings and conditions.

Wildlife is a highlight of any trip. Kingfishers dart along the banks, while swans, herons, and even the occasional otter can be spotted. In summer, the reedbeds hum with dragonflies and warblers.

Upstream sections tend to be narrower and less suitable for casual paddling, though they remain important for salmon and trout conservation. Overall, the Frome offers paddlers a peaceful blend of history, nature, and gentle adventure in the heart of Dorset.
