One of the Cambridgeshire lodes, the Wicken Lode turns off Reach Lode, and crosses Wicken Sedge Fen. It then runs for nearly 1.5 miles to just short of the village of Wicken. The lode itself is quite narrow and shallow. It’s perfect for a little paddle and means there are no powered crafts using this stretch. The perfect place to get in touch with nature and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside all on your own.

Wicken Fen is one of the oldest nature reserves in England. The wetland here is now largely maintained by the National Trust. It is not a true fen, as the area is higher than the surrounding land. However since the 1950’s the wetland has been maintained by a drainage windmill pump just to the south of the lode. It’s a great place to observe wildlife for this very reason, and is a popular spot for observing wading birds.
