Restored and reopened by volunteers in 2002, the Rochdale canal links Manchester to Sowerby Bridge on a cross-Pennine route. The canal stretches 32 miles in total, with a whopping 91 locks on the stretch… but the steep climb of the canal is worth it for the views, so we’re told!
Between Todmorden and Littleborough and Manchester and Moston you will find the majority of the locks, so if you’re wanting to paddle and avoid a lock every few metres, don’t paddle in these sections.
Don’t discount the route because of the amount of locks though. The Rochdale canal is a superb paddle for the views alone. Jaw-dropping Pennine scenery, what’s not to love!?
