One of Britain’s oldest canals dating back to 120AD, the Fossdyke Navigation in Lincolnshire links the River Witham to the River Trent.
It carves a flat, straight path through the Lincolnshire countryside, perfect for a Sunday stroll style paddle.
The Fossdyke navigation is 11 miles long with just 1 lock. It’s the perfect paddle for those not wanting to portage much. It also offers incredible views of Lincoln Cathedral.
It was built by the Romans to join Lindum Colonia to the River Trent. The canal has been used to transport cargo for almost 2000 years, including the stone used to build Lincoln Cathedral in the 11th century.
Sunsets on Fossdyke Navigation
Because it’s very flat, the Navigation offers sunrise and sunset opportunities from the canal. The views can be spectacular.
Choose a nice clear day and you can be treated to vibrant orange and pink sunsets. With little light pollution, there are excellent stargazing opportunities post-paddle also.
And, as well as providing stunning sunset views, The gothic architecture rising from the city helps provide a dramatic backdrop.
A word of caution. Check the weather and wind speed before you head out for a paddle. The canal can be quite exposed in some parts.
