River Wye route

Hoarwithy is situated on the banks of the River Wye, and is a quaint little town with plenty of history.

We started our paddle by parking and launching from the Paddle UK Hoarwithy campsite (HR1 4TT).

The end point is in Ross-on-Wye (HR9 7BT), so you will need to shuttle between the two points using a car.

The get on in Hoarwithy is a gravel beach, so launching your craft is easy.

The campsite is back-to-basics or wild camping, so there are no toilets or refreshments.

bridge on the river wye

Forming part of a designated National Landscape, the lower part of the River Wye is a unique place to paddle.

Launching from the gravel beach in Hoarwithy we were quickly immersed in the rural surroundings of Herefordshire.

For much of the paddle we didn’t see anyone, only the occasional angler on the search for salmon.

The peaceful calm waters and rolling green hills was enough to get lost in.

church spire

As we rounded the final corner the historic St Mary’s Parish Church spire appeared over Ross-on-Wye.

Using a purpose built ‘take-out’ (easy-to-access area for disembarking) we got off the river and crossed the embankment back to the car.

Before heading home we took advantage of the Riverside Inn Cafe for a coffee and slice of cake.
