Buying a pre-loved paddleboard is a fantastic way to get on the water without a heavy initial investment. Whether you are looking for your first all-rounder or upgrading to a touring board, the second-hand market is full of great opportunities.
However, your board is more than just a piece of sports equipment; it is your primary flotation device. To help you stay safe, we’ve put together this essential inspection guide for your board, paddle, and leash.
Paddleboard Checks
Inflatable SUPs (iSUPs)
- The Pressure Test: Inflate it to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI and leave it for 24–48 hours. It must remain firm; any softening suggests a slow leak. You may also hear “hissing” if the board is not airtight.
- The Soap Test: A quick way to identify air gaps is by lathering the seams with soapy water while the board is inflated; this will create bubbles indicating gaps in the seams.
- Seam Integrity: Check for yellowing, crusty glue or peeling tape at the seams, as this indicates the adhesive is failing.
- Valve Health: Check that the valve seals are airtight. Ensure the valve cap fixes securely to prevent grit and debris from entering the mechanism. Check the spring-loaded pin clicks up and down freely to ensure the mechanism keeps air in.
All Boards (Hard & Inflatable)
- Weight Test: For hard boards, check if the weight is significantly heavier than advertised. Heavier boards indicate they may have absorbed water through a crack.
- Surface Inspection: Check for cracks, bulges, or deep dents. Bulges on an inflatable paddleboard (often called “hernias”) indicate internal drop-stitch failure, which often means the board is at the end of its life.
- Hard Board Delamination: Press firmly with your thumb on the deck and hull of a hard board. If the surface feels soft or “spongy,” it likely has delamination—meaning the skin has separated from the foam core. This is a costly and difficult repair.
- Deck Pad: Check that the deck pad edges are not lifting, as they could create a trip hazard or lead to the entire pad peeling away.
- Carry Handles: Ensure handles are secure and the stitching/bonding is in good condition. A snapping handle while carrying your board can cause damage or injury.
- Fins: Inspect the fin and the box. The fin should attach securely with no wobble. Ensure the fin is straight and free of sharp, jagged edges that could slice an inflatable board during storage.
- Leash Attachment Points: Check that the “D-ring” or leash plug is rock-solid and free of corrosion. If this point is weak, your most important safety tether may snap.

Leash Checks
The leash is your most important piece of safety kit. If it fails, you and your board can be separated in seconds by wind or current.

- The Cuffs: Inspect the velcro and stitching. It should be difficult to peel apart and completely free of debris like sand or hair, which can cause it to pop open under tension.
- The Cord & Swivels: Look for UV damage (discoloration or brittleness) and any nicks in the cord. Ensure the swivels at both ends move freely.
Paddle Checks
A faulty paddle can leave you stranded. Since you rely on it for balance and movement, it must be in top condition.
- Buoyancy: Check if the paddle floats. If internal seals have failed, it may eventually sink, leaving you without a way to return to shore. Shake the paddle; if you hear water moving inside, the seals may have been compromised.
- The Shaft: Ensure the shaft is perfectly straight. Check for dents in aluminum or stress fractures in carbon/fiberglass. These create weak points that can buckle under the pressure of a power stroke.
- Corrosion & Wear: On aluminum paddles, look for white, powdery corrosion. For carbon paddles, look for “tufts” of carbon fiber poking through the finish—these are structural weak points.
- Locking Mechanisms: Check that all clamps or pins are secure. A “spinning” or sliding handle mid-stroke can cause you to lose your balance and makes paddling ineffective.
