Kayaking for beginners: tips to get started

So we’ve persuaded you to give it a go… now all you need is:

  1. A kayak
  2. A paddle – kayak paddles, unlike canoe paddles, have a blade on each end and you hold the middle (the shaft). This differs from the canoe paddle, which has single blade on one end, and a grip handle on the other end.
  3. Safety equipment – a buoyancy aid or other floatation device should be worn when kayaking. It might also be worth considering whether you need a helmet, depending on the type of water you are paddling.
  4. Knowledge… and a little bit of knowledge goes a long way!
