What is a Roof Tent?

A roof tent is a compact, elevated tent that is mounted on the roof of your car, caravan, or campervan. This innovative solution provides an off-the-ground camping experience, offering advantages such as quicker setup, better insulation, and protection from the elements. Roof tents are designed for all types of adventures, from a quiet night by the beach to rugged mountain retreats. They’re especially beneficial for those who want to avoid the hassle of traditional tent camping and take advantage of a more minimalist yet comfortable setup.

Paddling Tips for Roof Tent Enthusiasts

If you’re planning a paddling trip while using a roof tent, there are a few important tips to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Secure your gear: Roof tents are perfect for saving space, but it’s essential to ensure all your paddling equipment, such as paddles, buoyancy aid, and craft, are safely stored. Many sites offer secure storage areas for kayaks and outdoor equipment.
  • Type of craft: Now we know what you’re thinking, roof tent camping won’t be compatible for all craft types. If your roof tent is on the roof of your car, where will your craft go? So if you are thinking about a roof tent adventure we’d recommend taking an inflatable SUP or kayak as they are easy to transport in the boot of your car.
  • Check if you need a waterways licence: You may require a license for the waterway, which can be covered by a Paddle UK membership. Some areas may have specific rules for paddling, such as designated launch points or time restrictions. Always check with the site staff or local authorities to make sure you’re following the guidelines.
  • Bring the essentials: While roof tents provide comfort, make sure you bring all the necessary equipment for your paddling adventure, including waterproof bags for your gear, appropriate clothing, and safety items like a whistle or flare.
  • Plan for easy access to the water: When booking your site, inquire about the best spots for paddling and whether there’s a convenient way to launch your craft from the site. Some sites have direct access to water, while others may require a short walk or drive to the nearest launch point. Our PaddlePoints page is a great tool for finding safe launch sites and nearby routes.
