So, you’re ready to hit the water and try stand up paddleboarding? Awesome! Let’s run through the essential gear you’ll need to get started.
The Board
First things first, you’ll need a board! There are a few different types, but as a beginner, you’ll probably want an inflatable or a wide, stable hardboard. These are easier to balance on and manoeuvre. We’ll go into more detail about choosing your first board later, and remember, there are plenty of places to rent boards if you’re not ready to buy your own.
The Paddle
Next, you’ll need a paddle. Make sure it’s the right size for you – generally, it should be about 6-8 inches taller than you.
Buoyancy Aid
Safety first! A correctly fitted buoyancy aid is a must, no matter where you’re paddling. Look for one with a pocket to store your phone and snacks.
Leash
A leash attaches your board to you, so you don’t lose it if you fall off. For still water, an ankle or calf leash is fine. For moving water, you’ll need a quick-release waist belt leash for safety.
Waterproof Phone Case and Dry Bag
Always carry a phone for communication and emergencies. A waterproof phone case and a dry bag to keep your valuables safe are essential.
Clothing
Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. Neoprene shoes will keep your feet warm, and layers are a good idea when it’s cooler. Pack extra clothes in a waterproof bag, just in case!
